He shows us unmatched images of wonder—from icons of scenery such as Yosemite Valley, Lake Tahoe, and Mount Whitney to remote and secret enclaves amid the peaks and the canyons.

"Luminous Mountains: the Sierra Nevada of California" is a slide presentation about one of America’s most beloved mountain ranges. Based on Tim Palmer’s 2008 photo book of the same title, this spirited show offers a visual journey of discovery up high peaks and down wild rivers. Tim takes us through the stormy white depths of winter and into ancient forests suffused with life. He tells us about the intricate cycles of life and about the imminent threats to nature in California’s greatest mountain range. His presentation leaves us inspired by the wonder, the beauty, and the importance of the Sierra.

Tim Palmer has written 19 books about the American landscape, conservation, adventure travel, and rivers. His photo book, California Wild, won the Benjamin Franklin award as the best book on nature and the environment in 2004. He wrote the text for Yosemite: the Promise of Wildness, which won the Director’s Award as the best book about a national park in 1997. The Washington Post called Tim’s 1988 book, The Sierra Nevada: A Mountain Journey, “Clean, cool, holistic…the total effect is exhilarating.” Tim has traveled extensively through the Sierra by foot and on skis, with his canoe and whitewater raft, and in his well-equipped van.

Robert Pavlik signs Norman Clyde Biography (czerwiec 6 o 16:30)
Robert C. Pavlik.
The first complete biography of the notorious but beloved Sierra mountaineer! In conjunction with Heyday Books, and the Eastern California Museum and their fantastic Norman Clyde exhibit, we are pleased to be bringing Robert Pavlik (yes, he's Bruce's brother) to the East Side to sign his popular book, ... (więcej)Norman Clyde: Legendary Mountaineer of California's Sierra Nevada. If you can't make it to Robert's Bishop appearance, head down to the ECM on Sunday, June 7th at 3pm for their book signing -- enjoy the exhibit, share your Norman Clyde stories, and maybe even check out the Still Life or that new restaurant in Independence for dinner. (And if you do, give me a foodie review please!) Light refreshments will be served at both events. About the book: This riveting account of one of the most notable personalities of the mountain climbing world reconstructs the life of legendary mountaineer Norman Clyde (1885-1972). He made his mark on history with more than one hundred and thirty first ascents throughout western North America, and many believe he knew the High Sierra better than anyone else, including John Muir. Part of his mystique comes from participating in high-profile mountain rescues and recoveries, in which he is credited with saving a number of lives. Those who had the good fortune to meet him--often with a ninety-pound pack on his back that included an anvil for boot repair, fishing rods, cooking pots, and books in Greek and Latin--never forgot the experience. Biographer Robert C. Pavlik uses Clyde's own words, along with recollections from his family, friends, fellow climbers, and acquaintances, to capture the experiences of a remarkable man and a bygone time "between the pioneers and the rock climbers." Here's part of what Steve Roper has to say about Robert's book: "The word 'unique' is often used inappropriately, but after you read this book I would wager that you can't think of a better word for this prodigious individual." Robert C. Pavlik is an environmental planner and historian with the California Department of Transportation. He is a native of Cleveland, Ohio, but was raised in the San Fernando Valley and grew up in the mountains of California, hiking, climbing, and enjoying the remote places of quiet beauty throughout the state. He lives in San Luis Obispo.

Author Vincenza Scarpaci presents her book, The Journey of the Italians in America (wrzesień 28 o 18:30)
Vincenza Scarpaci.
Italian immigrants have played an important role in the history of our country, and author Vincenza Scarpaci visits Bishop to present her new book, The Journey of the Italians in America. Join us for her presentation of this thoroughly researched and lavishly illustrated book!Between the years 1880 and ... (więcej)1914, nearly four million Italian immigrants arrived in the United States. While the Italian population was initially clustered in the industrial Northeast, the growing number of immigrants began fanning out across the country in search of work or adventure, transforming the communities and landscapes they came into contact with along the way as dramatically as they themselves were changed by the American experience. In "The Journey of the Italians in America," Scarpaci embraces the contradictions of the Italian American legacy, considering the multifarious ways in which Italians became an essential part of American history without generalizations. Every aspect of life, ranging from religion, the struggle for citizenship, anti-Italian prejudice, World War II, Columbus Day parades, Italians in popular culture, and of course, food, all come to life in this insightful and candid photographic journey. Drawing from both private and public photograph collections, the author explores the traditions, history, and legacy of Italians in America. The photographs, some dating to the 1800s, represent more than one hundred years of Italian American life, each telling the intimate story of an Italian family, individual, or business. From agrarian family homesteads in Italy to prosperous commercial enterprises in New York City, the photographs, accompanied by insightful, detailed captions, capture the complex and nuanced chronicle of an ethnic group as diverse as it is influential.
