I have never before read a book so filled with wisdom and love.
All four of my kids will be getting a copy of True Compass for Christmas.

The books by Sean Barron and Temple Grandin ( seriously, no touchstone for Grandin???) were enlightening and fascinating to me. They are books that everyone who works with a population such as the one where I work should read. Hat tip and many thanks to tymfos .

The Last Will of Moira Leahy is a vine read.. and pure pleasure. I will put up a review later I think...

usually when working I read 2-3 on the weekend and one during the week..

What did you think of True Compass?

I am buying each of my children a copy of True Compass for Christmas...
I have never done that with a book before..

I posted a review of The Last Will of Moira Leahy. I liked it. A lot.

WOW! What a great recommendation regarding True Compass.

I just read your review of The Last Will of Moira Leahy and added it to the ever growing tbr pile. It sounds like a great book.

You know.. I really loved it.. it is a debut novel. There is much promise here for more good reading from this author.

OK, so Mum may have completely and utterly sabotaged my no-Farmville plan in a rather devious fashion. I've been babysitting her farm during my time in the office at work, when we swap places for the afternoon and she's out on the counter... and, well, it was quite fun.

I am now the proud owner of 12 little patches of earth filled with strawberries, soybeans, wheat and eggplants, three sheep, a piglet, two little hay bales and four beautiful fruit trees... DAMMIT!

Howdy, neighbor. How're they gonna keep you down on the farm now that you've see LT??? Just couldn't let that one slip into the abyss un-posted.

I have been super duper busy in my RL. I have not been able to LT or FB except for the random quick IM chat here and there.

I'm reading a book which I will not post the touchstone for it because someone has been messing with LT and has it hooked up to some SPAM links. Ggggrrrrrrr. I hate spammers. I have Elsewhere on my TBR cyber stack and will move it after I read your take on it. I have so many good books checked out and not enough time to read ... *pouting.* Of course, I have some control over my time ... it just seems like lately there is too much to be done, health-wise and now I've added a class at Florida State University to the mix.

I'm simply stopping by to wave hello and say I hope your work week was better this week that previous ones.

Did not get to finish Elsewhere. I watched tv.. Flashforward for one, and then Greys Anatomy. ..sigh. blasted new season, lol. Elsewhere is quirky and has held my interest so far. I like quirky in a book, and a friend :)

I like Greys' Anatomy too. Yes, the fall season has started once again. I think I might pass on one or two of my favorties and then get them as DVDs and watch them in the summer when there is nothing on. I don't seem to have enough time right now for everything!

I follow your thinking about the DVD of the whole season at once ... next Summer.

We have scaled back on our cable service to just the basics and no land line (telephone) at all, with the current economy the way it is. Wireless, wireless for us.

So, DVD's really come in handy ... although we have given up Netflix until after we get our drug insurance coverage again in January, 2010. Right now everything is pay-as-you-go. Lots of us are in the same boat!

It is fun not to have to wait a whole week for the next episode; it is more like having a good book and reading chapter to chapter one after the other. Books are still number one at our house, although, I have been known to read during the long commercial breaks.

OOOO don't keep us in suspense!

Borders is giving educators (past and present) 30% off "nearly everything" until October 7; I received 30% off each individual book I purchased tonight. Just sharing in case you want to take advantage of it.

I'm all DVD'd up right now too - and the books are suffering. See, right, it's easier to plant raspberries and harvest them every two hours of an evening with a DVD on, right, so that you can keep checking on them and making sure there are no little animals demanding your attention or trees fruiting... :-)

Plus I'm a little boy crazy in this blustery autumn weather we're having over here, so DVDs with tall, dark and handsome men in them are just too much of a siren call!

I kept thinking of the pigs ..... *sigh* and i had to start up a new farm! Now i'm constantly worried about whether or not I'll get to harvest my fruit and vegetables before they wilt, about milking the cows, getting truffles from the pigs...arrgghhh... this is all YOUR fault!

*mumbles disparaging remarks* as I amble off to pick plums....

PS The kitten is home and her name is Milady Guinevere but her nickname and what I call her is "Gwenni" after the protagonist in The Earth Hums in B Flat. She is the loving-est girl you can imagine. There is plenty left over for me to send lots and lots of love your way.

i'm glad Farmville isn't too real because with my real brown thumb, i'd kill all the plants. the animals I'd manage better though because at least i'd remember to feed, wash and water them, although I'd want to keep my barn small since I remember from working on a farm once during the summer years ago that cleaning out a barn is not a pleasant smelling experience.

Since the incident on friday.. I am feeling stressed.. more so than I should.
This isn't helping. It makes me tired. That is my reaction to a lot of stress, my body just wants to sleep. I am trying to shake it off....

Here is an idea for a "game of the imagination" for you Kath, although when you are very tired, it is a little difficult to play.

Imagine, if you will, that a very dear, lovely friend needs to be close to her fur babies, but, also needs some time to restore her body and soul. Make a mental list of the most helpful, wonderful things that your "friend" might choose to do. Special foods, aroma therapy, Reiki, massage, foot baths, back and foot rubs, meditation, you know, you know. She (your friend) will find something that appeals to her even in her present somewhat depleted state of body and mind.

She also knows just who she needs to not have present in her life right now, and gently and thoughtfully goes about making sure that they are not able to get to her physically or emotionally right now, while she heals.

I know that you know that I am speaking to you my friend, YOU, dear Kath.

I don't have your answers ... but fully support what ever will give you some benefits. Wish I was there to stand guard while you rest.

but then again, it looks therapeutic ....and isn't watching fish swim about supposed to be relaxing? Perhaps you ought to play this game and see if it helps you destress?

I know you admire Ted Kennedy. I recently read an article about him in the September 7, 2009 edition of Newsweek. It was well written and favorably balanced.

Way back, on Direct Red: you found it bland, but actually your review makes me want to read it - my husband's a doctor and I'm naturally curious about what life is like on the inside for people other than him. Am going to try and look out for it.

Tana French is great too - I've got a copy of The Likeness but haven't got to it yet. Quite probably will this month as I'm feeling utterly brain-dead and in need of some more 'fun' reads.

Kath - it might be because they don't want to be rescued, or because when you do finally rescue them, you'll realize that they were well worth the effort (and scratches).

they won't let her. She is sweet and i had her in my arms.. went to put her in the carrier....it was gone
husband had brought it at my request. I told him to go away, because she wouldn't let him near her... ran at his approach. I told him to go back.. he did
and took the carrier. A car then a truck cam flying up the street making extra noise in the rain...

she had cringed at that noise before..
when i saw the cars I turned my back and stepped farther from the street..

Sorry. We just picked up two boys from the feral litter under our porch while we were gone this summer. See my profile page for their picture. The gray tabby is a real sweetie. The strawberry blond is a beauty, but still won't let us touch him. Didn't keep him from moving inside though, and his brother is delighted to have him to play with. That puts us back up to 6.

Oh my, six cats?! The most we had at once is four, although our dog is cat-sized and usually thinks he is one, so I guess I could say 4.5.

I went to our Annual Friends of the Library book sale today ... didn't find either of the books on my short list, but found some others, of course, as did RedHillsReader, my DH. I could not believe the numbers of people swarming over the racks and racks of books in the basement/garage of out huge Main library. It was overwhelming and reassuring at the same time.

At one point in my life, I had 6 cats and 5 dogs living together in perfect harmony in the house. It was bliss. Now I have no pets ... and I miss their company, but given my travel schedule and that of my husband's, I wouldn't dream of getting a pet and not being there for it so often.

Aww, Kath .. you sick too? Wrap up warm, drink lots of fluids, eat chicken soup, put your feet up and read. hope you feel better soon

Very stressed right now.. what with 2.5 cats now living on my porch and cold weather coming. One spends time here and time at a neighbors home. It is pretty clear that these are new "strays" to the neighborhood. And that they were once housecats. They are frightened and hungry and I am not familiar with them. They all turned up at about the same time. My own 3 are not at all sure how they feel about the intrusion.

At some point soon I will have to make a decision. The shelter will keep them for two weeks and see if they are claimed. Of course they will not be, but then they can go up for adoption. They are all adults.

One may have a home.. will talk to Sharon on Monday. I told her I would do a vet check and test for felv/fiv and make certain the cat is spayed/ neutered. In the last 3 years two other families moved, and simply set their cats free. This may be #3? Not sure.

I don't understand people who just let their pets loose when they move. How mean is that?! Would they leave their kids behind if they knew they'd never get caught? Even if they tried and couldn't find new homes for their pets, surely they could have at least given them to shelters so they could be put up for adoption?

We had a neighbor.. she had 3 cats. She got a dog. She had a baby. She tossed the 3 cats out. One died of felv. Two were taken in by a neighbor. she took the dog to the shelter. She left her kids and went off with some guy.

My sister lives in an area where animals are dumped all the time, unfortunately. She rescues those that she can and makes sure they go to good homes. That is how we acquired Skittles and Panda.

When I was young, my family sort of adopted a neighborhood stray cat (or he adopted us). He followed us home one night, and we fed him . . . He was very independent, didn't like to be cooped up in our little house, much preferred the great outdoors.

He used to jump up on the outside window ledge from the front step, tiptoe across in front of our picture window, and hop up onto the top of our window air conditioning unit and nap there. At Halloween, my Mom always put a cardboard cut-out of a black cat in our front window, and Mr. Cat would sit on the ledge just outside where the cardboard cat was. I got a feeling that he thought it was a real cat. :)

We never found out who the rat was who abandoned him.... :(

One of our cats was a gift, and came from a petstore (and he's nuts). I brought the other three home, and all three came from a shelter. It seems like it's so hard to re-home cats (especially adults), and I just couldn't bring myself to buy a pet store cat myself.

My favorite cat story:

Right around our first dating-Valentines my husband (a HUGE cat lover) moved into an apartment where he could have pets. As a gift I offered to adopt a cat for him, and off we went to the shelter. While there we saw tons of loving adult cats, adorable abandoned kittens, and even a cat that could have been the twin of my cat, David Bowie.

But in the very last crate there was a big black demon. It was a 4-year-old black male cat, and he spit and hissed and made all sorts of horrible noises when we went near his cage. Mike opened the door and stuck his arm in, and the cat immediately grabbed on with all four limbs and started biting his hand.

Mike backed up and looked at me while this monster of a cat is attempting to turn his arm into lunch and said, "Aw, honey - I want him!"

And that's the evil bastard that came home with us. To this day he's our favorite cat, and our toddler now uses him for a pillow. He's mellowed in his old age. ;)

Mask on and I will only give you an air hug! My son and daughter both went on the Tamiflu (they have risk factors like asthma, etc). My son to help him get over it faster and my daughter to try to prevent getting it (but she got it anyway) and/or make it a lighter case. Not sure if it helped my son, but my daughter had a really mild case. Does sometimes cause upset tummies and, get this, hallucinations. Luckily, my kids had no problems with it. Best of luck and sorry you got hit!!

Heres hoping you are feeling better real soon. Keep warm and hydrated.

Terri, It wasn't so much that I minded the religious aspect.. I often read books with a religious ..... flavor. But to me it was a little preachy, and it wasn't what I expected from the blurbs at the time. It is worth reading .. and I got over it enough to request this one.

This one is just pleasant and entertaining. I suspect that you will love them both.. let me know :)

Feel better soon, kath! Everything I've read and seen suggests that H1N1 in adults is no worse than the garden variety flu...if that's any consolation. I have a pack of Tamiflu handy, just in case.

Poor Kath -- lots of big air hugs and a virtual warm bowl of chicken soup sent your way. hope you feel better soon. I'm taking extra vitamins, hoping to stave off the flu bug that is making it's way around the office.

If you have to hallucinate, I hope you get some good ones that make you giggle

I've heard about the hallucinations associated with Tamiflu, kath, and I've prescribed Tamiflu to maybe 20-30+ hospitalized kids, but I haven't seen it happen yet. I would guess that it's a rare side effect, kind of like the risk of hallucinations that we'll rarely see when a child is given an oral corticosteroid; I've seen that happen at least twice in 9+ years of practice.

speaking of hallucinations...each time I have a surgery and am in the hospital given perocet, or roxicet or morphine...I have such weird, weird reactions..nasty nightmares. Not good stuff for me at all! I'm hyper sensititve to medications thus have never understood why people do drugs....

Seriously, I am oky.. coughing, headachy and sore throat...
not a big deal . Didn't even manage a hallucination from the meds... sigh.
I am having trouble concentrating on anything for long though..

I plan to go in to work tomorrow.. it is an in service day and i need to take this one to keep up my certification. Too many hours to blow off. If I told what it was you would find it amusing......under the circumstances.

You can't leave us hanging like that...What is the in service for?! Inquiring minds want to know!!

In service .. its just a training session on a day when there is no school for the kids, but staff attends. This one is our annual crisis training. It tells you what to do when you are attacked by a student, and how to handle it......without leaving the attacker.. or fighting back. It is great if the attacker read the same book, but trust me when I say ... so far, that has not been the case.
It always ends with the admonishment, do not allow yourself to get into the situation to begin with. Okay then.

I will not be going into work for 2 reasons. They called me and said stay home.
I feel worse today than I have been. blah blah blah...

I had to put aside A House at Riverton....it was irritating me.
Maybe I will attempt it again after The Haunting of Cambria.
This one I am loving. Cambria, California is a complicated place for me
emotionally. It is however, a beautiful place.. one I am glad to have had the chance to visit. This and the haunting aspect made this book call out to me. Perhaps when I finish it I can go back to Riverton?

Gotcha - we call it an 'inset day' or, very imaginatively, a 'staff training day'...

Hope you feel better soon, flu is so evil - on the plus side, at least you're in a state where you can still read... I've only ever had flu once, a few years ago, but I barely remember the main bit of it, I was just waaaaaaay out of it, lying there all huddled up with a fan blowing on my face for days. When I started to feel better Mum helped me downstairs to sit in an armchair in the hall, with the door open and a breeze blowing in, a blanket round my knees. I felt like I'd just stepped out of 'What Katy Did'!

The House at Riverton was a three star book in my ranking. I cannot put my finger on why it was so disappointing and seemed slow and draggy to me. I liked the character of the elderly woman just fine and the writing was okay, but I had to force myself to keep picking it up so that I could finish it and add it to my 75/2009 Challenge thread.

Hope that Cambria in engaging you, as you dive into it, and that it provides entertainment and distraction from the grungy symptoms.

If you haven't, go find a copy, now. It's one of those girlie must-reads, like Anne of Green Gables, that kind of thing... I haven't read it for years but I remember it being one of my absolute favourites when I was younger. Perfect for fluey reading time!

I hope that virus that took up residence in your good body dies a painless natural death and leaves you healthy and with some vim and vigor.

Remember those feelings ... they occur sometimes in the Spring, sometimes in the Fall like now? Where, oh where, are they this year? Hhhmmmmmm?

Well good luck to the phillies.. I can't believe that they are not done playing baseball. and wellness to you ruthie. We have trick or treat tonight.. and then tomorrow is the halloween party at school. Sadly, due to staff illness and absence there wil be no parade or trick or treating in the hallways as we usually do.. so it really won't be anything more than forcing the kids into costumes and sending them home with ... stuff.

Not easy to find treats for kids with diabetes or on that gluten/casein free diet.
Snacks either for that matter.

My Halloween will be spent at my youngest daughter's wedding and reception. For those of you who are so inclined, please send some white light, prayers, dance around a circle ten times while looking up at the moon...anything..anything that will help me get through the day with my exhusband and his mommie dearest. It is appropriate that the wedding is on Halloween because truly his mother is a witch. Her sisters (those that remain) are a bunch of nasty crows. I picture them all aligned on a telephone polel wire, black, sleek, stretched out across the line cawing to one another. I'd wish for a bee bee gun, but that would be way to nasty....

I'm there for my daughter and I love her dearly....

I always worry about that. I really did love the book, but it was a
wonderful read, not something that impacted me deeply. Those are the books that get my 5 stars. I hate to disappoint a wonderful writer..

You didn't disappoint the author. The author simply has unrealistic expectations. Don't feel bad because an author expects everyone to just fall down worshiping every word he/she's written, and you just really, really liked the book instead.

Four stars is a very good rating, and your review was EXTREMELY favorable. No sensible author should be disappointed in that! I rarely give more than 4 stars, even to books I really love. I think that's what I gave to the first ARC I received, and it blew my socks off and led me to read a whole new series!

Selfish author! Based on the review, I might have added the book to my Wishlist; but now I'm not going to because the author has upset you when you were already feeling lousy! So there!

There are a lot of active posters in this thread, so I thought I'd try to get support going for an idea I posted in the "Recommend Site Improvements" forum (thread is http://www.librarything.com/topic/76354 ). Here's the post:

"I post in a lot of groups, by my standards, and sometimes I want to go back to threads I've started in different groups. Presently I have squads of stuff starred, so that search is tedious; I won't even go into the size of the "Your Posts" choice.

Would it be a royal pain to introduce a "Threads You've Started" choice in the "Your World" bar? It would make my personal life easier, and I can imagine that of others as well."

If it sounds like a good idea to you, please go over there and post a response. It makes the request more popular, and so more likely to be granted.

No... I had actually corresponded with him... this is one of those books offered by Bostick. Many of them are ... not so good. Well, I should say that my experiences with them have not always been favorable. This book is fantastic. Seriously. I haven't liked a sci fi this much in years... Terri.. reconsider.. its a good one.

I liked your review, Kath, and give it 4 stars. Please do not be disappointed .. my star rating system means that your review impressed me to the degree that I am going to actively seek out the book.
As an author of many a stirring review, I'm sure you are aware that the ultimate praise you can get from your reader is their wholehearted and exuberant recommendation that others read them too.
I therefore encourage one and all to read Kath's wonderful review. She gives you just enough of a glimpse into the book to pique your curiousity and interest, but not enough so you feel you've read all the most interesting parts of the book, and therefore have no need to read it yourself.

Kath, you would only have gained a 5 star rating, if you gave me an inkling to one of the adventures they faced, and had me abandoning my work to search Amazon for a copy immediately.

(all said tongue in cheek of course)... hope you feel better.

I wish I would have ducked the flu shot. The University was dispensing the flu shot for $30 yesterday. My primary care doctor cannot get the vaccine and thus told me to run, don't walk to get it at work! Today I am so tired, achy and dragging.

I was really sick Thursday night... and couldn't breathe
Called off yesterday, have bronchitis, asthma is bad..
on steroids and abx.

Then had to take Duncan to vet.. too much urination....
too much drinking..
worrisome. 200$ later.. waiting for labwork..

chest not nearly as painful.. and can breathe, mostly
still pretty weak and weary... hopefull that will improve as the day goes on...

He worries me that boy...

The vet was a new, young part time girl.. there is a note on my chart that I am a previous employee there and very protective.. a euphemism for pain in the ass, and she seemed a little worried. I guess it didn't help when Deb ( the tech) and I started joking about when Peter.. ( another vet there) killed Duncan. It was far from funny at the time, I assure you.. but... it has joined the ranks of things you laugh about because you can't do anything else. Besides.. Jo and I got him back...
anyway.. she got very nervous about then.... lol. Poor thing. I tried to make nice when she called with the lab results.. and tell her what a great job she did.. but?

I downloaded a few books onto my itouch. Some freebies I found.. old/classics (like ) Rebecca . And I ::gasp:: bought one as well. Thenew one by Niffenegger...

The Man with the Golden Flute: Sir James, a Celtic Minstrel by James Galway
which was wonderful, and The Unnamed by Joshua Ferris which was dreadful.

I also downloaded Her Fearful Symmetry: A Novel by Audrey Niffenegger to my itouch for reading here and there, in betweens.. :)

I have been trying to read some threads here, even when I am not posting I am reading. ... and it seems I have been doing a lot of nothing. I play with my farm and fish at FB.. 'cause I am addicted to them too.

So, that is what I have been doing. Being lazy :)

I, too, loathe shopping...but i have all of my gifts bought....all books...now i have to send the darn things..have a small haul to mail tomorrow....the rest next week....good luck with your shopping...

haha another one that isn't that keen on the Shopping part. Don't get me wrong, I love getting new things (books, clothes etc). I just hate looking for them (and in the case of clothes: trying them on uggghh). Which is why I love shopping on the Internet - much easier, AND you find lovely things on your doorstep a week later :D

Well.. I had to shop for gifts for the angel tree where dan works.. you know..
couldn't do that online. Believe me when I say that otherwise, I would have done!

life is good.

I hate, loathe, abominate, and detest shopping (except for books, of course). I do all my shopping online, lol.

Add me to the vast number who hate trudging through busy shopping malls and elbowing my way through crowded megastores, etc., etc., accompanied by saccharine canned holiday music . . .

(It's almost enough to turn me into Scrooge. Humbug! ;)

When I'm shopping for gifts I much prefer to shop online because I can hit a limitless number of stores and find *just* what I'm looking for, instead of settling for whatever store #5 has that might be a second choice.

I actually love shopping in general (well, if the partner has the kids), but I don't go anywhere near a store during the holidays. I even order groceries online!

There are few things that will keep me out of a bookstore, though. I even braved one the night Harry Potter 6 was released...

I worked for a retailer and one holiday season was enough for me! Now I can't even stand to be near stores during that time. And if I do shop during the rest of the year, I am in and out as fast as I can. I fear I do not have the stamina or bravery to be a bargain hunter -- gives me horrors!

Well, maybe the book crowd is a bit different. Have you ever heard of a Black Friday riot at a Barnes & Noble??? :)

Hmmm. I hate shopping for shopping's sake, but I do love to browse bookshops, markets and record shops. Clothes shopping is my idea of the 9th circle of hell. I usually end up coming back with lots of comfort books/CDs/both and no clothes when I go clothes shopping...

words of wisdom, Berly. I so envy those people who always know which store has the best sales and they always buy the best, cheapest things because they know exactly where to find them. I usually just settle for whatever's in front of me because I don't have the patience/indefatigableness to look at more than 2-3 shops for something.

I actually like the carts with the squeaky wheels when I have to go grocery shopping because it warns people to get out of my way. I book through the isles (HA! I made a pun) and have zero patience for people walking like zombies down the middle of isles!

book shopping is no problem..i do that Online..Grocerys are another beast..i go to the store very early in the AM...no crowds....less hassle

#275 - Gift cards are wonderful. Shops, restaurants, NetFlix, or just plain Visa. We're giving several this year...

I hit a store called Tokyo Hands today and came back with bags of the quirkiest stuff I've never seen in the US. Some useful, some just plain strange, and all with a heavy dose of the cute factor.

I love receiving gift cards to bookstores, but my husband and I are, apparently the only ones in the family who do. All the others don't like gift cards (be they to restaurants, stores or Amex gift cards) ... they prefer us to have taken the time and effort to storm the stores, brave the crowds and come away with fuzzy mittens neatly boxed, wrapped and tied with pretty ribbons.

I am grateful that the family likes their gift cards :)

I've generally found that the folks who yowl the most about wanting you to take the time to buy a gift and don't want gift cards are the same ones who grouch about getting the "wrong" color mittens or the "ugly" sweater and having to exchange it.

*sigh*

Kath, the Ladies Club at my church have a cookie sale every year. They ask all the women in the parish to bake 3 dozen cookies & bring them up, and then they sell them for $5.00 a pound. There are a lot of people (myself among them!) who buy several pounds of cookies and put them out on trays for the holidays, pretending they've slaved for hours! Then I have to buy another 2 pounds just for my son to eat. It's a fabulous idea, and they make a ton of money from it!

Since I don't arrive home until Dec 21, I am therefore spared from having to go nuts baking a few hundred cookies this year. I will miss the activity, but since I also have to do last minute Christmas shopping, I don't think I'll have the mental or physical strength to make cookies this year. .... or maybe i'll make a teensy batch for ourselves .... i do love macadamia and peanut butter cookies

I'm supposed to be going Christmas shopping on Wednesday, but I'm working on finding any way possible to make it ME shopping instead. I don't go to town very often because of my agoraphobia and working so much, so I'll take all my tablets and make a day of it. I'm trying to get as much of my actual gift shopping done online as possible before then. Unfortunately I need new jeans/jumpers which means the dreaded clothes shopping (NOOOOO!!!) but after that hopefully I can just browse in Waterstones spending too much... Then maybe a Maccy D's and a trip to the cinema once Mum's finished her shopping too. Book shopping and fries, doesn't that sound nicer than Christmas shopping and trying on jeans?!

I ended up picking up a bunch of Godiva gift card boxes - chocolates, a giftcard, and a box to wrap! It fits all of my own holiday requirements. ;)

And I, too, am spared the holiday baking thanks to a mom who is Queen of Cookies. Every year she bakes 10+ types of cookies and makes up trays for her house, my grandmother's house, and my house. Mom cookies are the best.

I have a perfect excuse for not baking. My son's gluten-free diet means I don't have wheat flour in the house, and baking large quatities with expensive gluten-free flour is kind of cost-prohibitive -- especially since people on "regular" diets generally don't like the stuff anyway. . . .

I read Numbers last night. Certainly not a work of literary genius, but it was short as well, and a nice little read by the fire, with a cup of marshmallow-y hot chocolate. Review will be posted soon, as this is a vine book that must be reviewed.

I am going to have to try to catch up with my listing.. and total up my reads for the year.. lazy me.

Is there a link somewhere to sign up for next years challenge?

I had similar meh feelings story-wise re Ghostwalk, but I did enjoy the local history aspect of it (probably mostly because I know all the locations she was talking about pretty well)...

Baking cookies seems to be a big thing? We've absolutely no tradition of Christmas biscuits in my family at all - it sounds like a good tradition!

Baking Christmas cookies is a big thing here in the northeast US at least. My son has a peanut allergy, and I wanted to make sure that he felt Christmas's abundance so last year I baked 10 kinds of cookies since I couldn't buy or exchange any. Of those, he enjoyed snickerdoodles. This year I'm thinking I'll bake three kinds of cookies and some extra snickerdoodles ;-)

...I suppose my mum always makes a Christmas cake for each branch of the family every year (and it's always miles better than any other fruit cake you'll come across - the secret is lots of brandy ;)) - that probably equates to the biscuits...

I love snickerdoodles. When I was a kid, I loved them so much it was one of my cat's names.

I like anything cinnamon. I bought some snickerdoodle dough from Market day :)

Seriouosly, I don't enjoy baking.. i have a small kitchen.. no table in there.. and if I use the dining room table, the cats want to help. Market day has cookie dogh that is already portioned. You drop it on a tray and bake..warm, fresh, yummy cookies in minutes.

I refuse to feel guilty ..lol

I now must make snickerdoodles, drat it. Only I like mine with chopped pecans added. GAWD they're good!
