O mnieEnglish Lit degree; wild about BookMooch & LibraryThing. Life prevents me from reading nearly as much as I'd like - my 'To Read' collection is scary (and exciting!). I'm proud to say I've read Ulysses cover-to-cover and readily admit I understood about 5 words.
When I'm not reading, look for me in my garden!
O mojej biblioteceShelves by IKEA, but not enough of them. I wish my shelves actually reflected more of what's listed on LT, but I'm limited by what my garage, bedroom, office, hallways, family room, and living room can handle -- and by what my husband is willing to lift each time we move.
Occasionally my books are lost through loans gone bad -- or to Evil Dog #1 (see photo). He likes to eat old books when unsupervised, and all efforts to convert him to Reader's Digest have failed.
Fiction is my mainstay. Particular weakness for CanLit, gothic, Victorian or historical thrillers.

4 stars for Nightwatch is also good to see. Have you read her latest? I have only read Fingersmith which I loved and have Nightwatch, Affinity and The Little Stranger begging for attention from my shelves. Oh so many books , so little time......

The cat is our cat, who showed up in our neighborhood in August as a very small kitten. We were the only people willing to take her, but it's worked well. We have two dogs and one of them, a mutt who was abused before we got her, fell in love with the kitten and they remain very good friends. Cats read with there butts, you know. She likes to read whatever we're reading.

I have places in the house that would be perfect for new shelves, but my SO wants to make them, so it may be a few years. How is it that I keep buying books despite the multitude in my house that I haven't gotten to yet.

I went to my library book sale and managed to keep myself $6 under budget and well within the one box limit I'd imposed on myself. Of course, fitting them onto my bookshelves feels a little like Noah getting all the animals onto the ark and I'm doing it without divine help.
Do you remember from your childhood a cartoon program that was on Saturday mornings called "Rocket Robin Hood"? Just wondering. It doesn't seem to have existed in the US, but I have very fond memories of it.

Went to a booksale today and picked up some vintage Horatio Alger books for 25 cents each. Another booksale next weekend. Bought new Rick Mofina book today as he was signing copies at a store in The Glebe area of Ottawa (similar to Kits). I have all his books and I spoke to him about getting onto Library Thing. He came to my group a couple yrs ago and his books are really good. Scary and thrilling.
Oh I see you gave 4.5 stars to The Uncommon Reader!! Cool. That's my Dec book for my group. I wanted something funny and light. I have to find a copy before then.
It's super hot and humid here lately. Looking forward to cooler temps.
Happy Weekend!

We are eating fresh, home-grown tomatoes, planning a birthday party for my youngest (who is turning six) and enjoying the last week of vacation before the kids start back to school.

I heard your heat is going to continue thru the long weekend. It's not humid tho. Yuk. I can hardly breathe right now with the sticky icky humidity. We had wicked thunder storms today. I ate my lunch in a quiet room that has one wall of windows and watched the lightening flashes instead of reading! We had window cleaners that had to cut short their day.. Unreal. Whitehorse has had the heat too. Seems it's all over on that side of the country! Supposed to be nice tomorrow, rain Fri etc.
I'm liking 13th Tale and hope to dive into it this weekend. Maybe I can get out on my bike for the first time this summer.
Picked up some more books today and I'm up over 1700 now.. Everywhere books, books, books!
Good luck with the painting and good for you! - that is hard work and esp when it's hot.
Cheers,
Clam

I finished L'il Bee today. It was so good. After you read it, we can discuss it. Started The 13th Tale. A bkgrp at another public library that runs yr round is discussing it mid Aug so for the 1st x in 5 yrs I will drop into someone else's grp to see how they do things.
I hope you get time to read Reliable Wife. I really liked it a lot. Have you read the 10th gift? I saw it at Costco recently and it looks interesting. Did Waiting for Gertrude in my group awhile back. Met him when he read from it at the YVR writers fest on granville isle. That has to be the best all-time author reading I have ever been to. He had opera singers dressed as cats that were just incredible, some playing piano as well. It was a jam-packed room and a tremendously fun night. I showed him pix of my kitty at the time when he signed my book - how nerdy is that??! For all the times I have been in Paris, I have never been to the cemetary of Shakespeare & Co. Next time I guess.
Rained for a good part of the weekend. It's humid and sticky and disgusting. My tomatoes are probably water logged. The weather looks to be clouds/rain/blah all week. Yay. With all this wierd weather, I wonder what the outlook is for the winter? I think we are due for a mild one here. Well I better get things ready for work tomorrow. Have a great week in the sun!:)

I picked up a copy of Child 44 today! I went on a quest for books this afternoon to a couple of my fave haunts and found two copies of it! One was the LP hardcover version then I found a paperback so bought that one along with about 15 other books... I am looking forward to reading it.

Yes, I did plant tomatoes. I have 4 types at one stalk each. Limited space. I have about 14 showing and no bigger than a cherry..Be a wee while yet. My basil is doing very well. That's all I planted this year and the rest is all flowers. tons of flowers. It's raining today (big surprise). It's been miserable here. I heard about your 30C weather yesterday. I am glad it's nice somewhere! It really has been a rainy summer so far but hey, there is always August! My b-day is Monday so am hoping for a nice day as I took it off and the office is playing golf on Thurs so a lot of crossed fingers. Everything is lush.
Exams and school are over. Wrote my last one on the 15th. Next class starts on Sept 16th so have lots of reading time. We decided to discuss what we read over the summer at the first bkgrp meeting in Sept so that is a bit more of a break which is great. So far I have read and loved: The Reliable Wife, Last Night in Montreal (fantastic new writers), Ian Sansom's The Mobile Library: the case of the missing books. This one was absolutely hilarious. Now reading Little Bee which is just stellar writing. I was impressed just 2 pages in. It's really very good. I'm trying to read the books I've gotten from LT as I'm behind on them. This month's selection for Canada was disappointing and for the first time, I did not select anything. Last month wasn't so hot either but I got The Embers. I'm sure it will pick up going into the fall.
I looked up The Forgotten Garden and it looks interesting. I have her previous book. Child 44 sounds like something that would keep me awake all night.. and I would like to read. I just got a copy of The Little Book, first time author at 68 and it took him 30 yrs over his career as a teacher to write it! Supposed to be very good. Oh so much to read.
I've been to a bunch of book sales but they have tapered off, although there is one going all summer that I should go back to soon.
I hope the rest of the summer is as good as it's already been for you, your garden sounds lovely. Any predictions yet on what the winter will bring? Have you decided what to do during the Olympics? I can't wait. I will watch as much as possible but will wish that I still lived there..
Take care!

Are you serious??? Lettuce and strawberries already? I haven't even planted my tomatoes yet because it's been so cold. I was told today by a co-worker (garlic farmer) that I should have brought them in last night so not sure what I will find when I get home tonight. I am at school waiting for class to start. I am dog tired and don't look or feel at all well. ugh but I do not like missing class! Took a fingerprinting class on Saturday here. very interesting. Some really cool gruesome parts... Great place to be if you are a mystery writer!
It's been so icky and cold here. And again today. It's raining again and dark. There was hail on the weekend and snow in some parts. Supposed to get better in a few days. And of course the AC is on in the office so everyone is going round with layers like it's winter.
My flowers are so beautiful however. They always make me smile when I look out in the am. Pansies everywhere.
I need Super Squirrel to go run out of dodge the pesky squirrel that has been making a mess of things on my balcony, it drives my cats snakey.
I'm getting yet another book. I love LT. I am trying to get some local authors to join. They are all at something called BloodyWorks2009 this coming weekend. Very $$ event meant for published or wannabe authors really or those who can afford it.
Work is rather boring these days but I have a few make-work projects that are going well. School is great but two classes this term is a lot. I finish in mid July and then have a break till about the 2nd week of Sept. I plan on reading only small books so it looks like I've read so much more to the naked eye..
Suite F was and remains one of my faves. Such a riveting background story.
Not much else new. I have no life. Or energy for that matter.
I watched yesterday (like a Yukon spud) The Jane Austen BookClub. I have the book but have not read it. It was adorable but way too much happy endings to be plausible but it was endearing. The lone male member was Keeee-Ute. Yum. Pure escapism from studying (mid-term on Wed night) I am sooo good at finding more important things to do. (knitting animal blankets for the Humane Society) dusting, moving around my books etc etc yup I can come up with 50 ways to waste more time.
Anyhow I better run, I have to pass thru two bldgs to get to mine.
Hope the sun is still shining and can spare some for us wilting weeds!

How's things? Lots of rain here and makes me miss YVR. Wierd spring. Weather is all over the place.
I absolutely loved Suite Francaise. The back story is equally interesting. I read a biography that was translated after SF came out. She was an interesting woman if somewhat confused. I have a few of her re-released books but have yet to read them.
I'm reading Salmon Fishing in the Yemen which is fun. Two courses this term so not much time for reading.
Anyhow just wanted to say hello and hope all is well. I hope your garden is coming along. I have lots of flowers out and 2 tomato plants that's it (frost a couple days ago)
Cheers,

Your books are in the mail. I went to a different post office and realized why I am so partial to the one I usually go to. Even after I'd asked for the cheapest possible shipping option, she tried to sell me the deluxe overnight versions. I hate that.
Anyway, King Leopold's Ghost is not a beautiful copy, but it is the best book of the bunch on its way to you. Really gut-wrenching and sad, but it illuminates what's happening there now. Maybe read it along with What Angels Fear, which is pure entertainment.

I just finished "The Worst Hard Time" which was one of the best books I've read lately, but left me somewhat melancholy. I'll have to watch reruns of "My Name is Earl" or read brightly colored chick-lit tonight in order to snap out of it. Anyway, depression aside, I highly recommend it as it's a compulsively readable account of life during the Great Depression and what farm life actually entailed less than 100 years ago.
