O mnieNo, the photo isn't of me! They are my two new puppies - Billy and Bender. I'm a librarian in the public library system. I've always loved books and reading and have bookcases that are groaning under the weight of my books.

O mojej biblioteceMy library is mostly fiction. I love to read Australian authors and also have a large collection of young adult novels (mostly Australian).
Some favourite authors (amongst many) are:
Tim Winton
Isabel Allende
Paulo Coelho
JM Coetzee
Sonya Hartnett
Andrew McGahan
Peter Goldsworthy

Noticed you liked Lovely Bones, and I was wondering if you'd be interested in reviewing my new novel and posting your comments here, as well as a few other book-related sites. Thought you might like my book since it also contains a young female narrator struggling with a series of tragic circumstances. I could e-mail you the novel in an e-book format if you'd like (I'm out of physical copies at the moment). Here's a link to a summary (and a sample chapter) in case you'd like to read more about the book before you commit:

Hi Judy;
These seem to be very popular books as they have already been read by a great number of people.
At any rate, the discussion threads will be on the 50 book challenge and Mark (msf59) is wonderful about setting up a fresh thread for each section to be read. That way people can apply their comments to the appropriate thread, thusly avoiding "spoiler" for the readers who keep to the scheduled read or for whom life throws in those little hurdles and sets us behind in our reading.
Anyway you will be hearing more as the time draws nearer.
Thank you for your response. I appreciate your input.
hugs,
belva
Hi;
Mark and I have been discussing the possibility of another group read in November and want your input. We have narrowed it down to two books at this point. "The People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks and "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. So chat it up with friends or us and let us know if you are up for it and what you think. Probably the same plan as with "Pillars of the Earth" which seemed to work out perfectly for almost all of us.
Think it over and give one of us a shout.
hugs and looking forward to hearing from you,
belva
Hi Judy

Just saw your post in the 1001 book group. I'm also reading "Oranges" during July and I'm reading from the 1001 list.
On your TBR I'd highly recommend "Half of a Yellow Sun", it's on both "lists".

I'm halfway through "The Lost Dog" very good, but any allusions to Henry James work are as lost on me as the dog is in the book. I havent read any of his work as yet.

Next up for me is "Small Island" it's "best of the best" for the Oranges and also on the 1001 list.

Happy reading :-)
Hi Judylou!

Thanks for your post!
Hi Judylou
I love the photo of your dogs! I'm stopping by to say thanks for visiting my thread and posting the comment regarding The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. It is such a powerful book!
Thank you for posting on my new thread tonight.
Hi, Judy!
Thanks so much for the friends invitation! I look forward to seeing what you are reading this summer. (Or I guess winter in Australia!) I love the photo of your puppies!! I think that now that June is coming up and graduation is over, I am going to see if I can figure out how to work on my profile page. I was noticing that I have been a member for a year, and still haven't figured that out! Have a great day and thanks again!

Hi Judy, I hope you don't mind, I have added you as an interesting library. I am going to pick through your Australian books. Diane

I love the photo of Billie and Bender. What breed are your dogs? Their paws look big so I image they will grow rather rapidly.
hi Judy...nice to see you here...love your new puppies. See you at work one day soon.
Trudi
aww Judy your dogs are so cute!
hi judylou - you commented on my 50 book challenge a while ago, sorry i never responded, things have been busy and i have not logged in for some time. how did you like [slautherhouse five]? i thought it was interesting, but not that memorable, i can't now even really think what to say, and it's only been a couple of months.
Oh my goodness!!!! I want those dogs immediately. They are gorgeous. I can give you my address and you can ask the pooches to meet me at my apartment. The keys will be under the mat.

Gosh they are so cute. What breed is that?
I must find more Shirley Jackson. Her famous short story, The Lottery, can be found online with a google search. I've been told that 'The Sundial' is another great book along with 'The Haunting of Hill House'. She really doesn't write horror but her books can leave you feeling uneasy.
after being here 15 years i no longer find it so interesting... especially as of late. we're talking perth right now as a possibility for semi-retirement. but that won't be tomorrow :)

i have reread books only to realize it during the final chapters.
glad you're enjoying my reviews... i'm having a blast reading these books. i write short reviews because my memory is so bad i forget what i've read (i've got multiple copies of the same book) i'm waiting for a bunch of books to arrive today so i'm not sure what's next on my reading list. so for now i've got my head in orhan pamuk's other colors. it's been on my current reading list since january... not because it's a slow go, but because it's so good i like to take it in small doses.
I also felt that the plot was slow, and I'm the type of person who usually enjoy a really slowly plotted novel. I love Murakami, but TWUBC was a bit of a challenge to get through, at least at first. You know, the Japanese version is actually even longer than the English version! Jay Rubin, the translator, worked with Murakami to shorten it (at the publisher's request). At any rate, good luck! Enjoy that last bit.
I also saw your plea for encouragement on The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I'm a big Murakami fan, but I found TWUBC slow going at first, and not entirely compelling. By the end, I was so glad that I'd stuck with it, because it got better (more interesting) as it went along, and the last 100 pages or so were wonderfully rewarding.
I wanted to encourage you with [Wind Up Bird Chronicle]. I recently discovered Murakami and I really love this book. If you don't like magical realism, it may not be for you. If you do, though, it really is an excellent example from modern times. My previous favorite was Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but you have to change things up a bit.
Hey Judy,
Thanks for taking time out to check out what I am reading on the 75 book challenge. As to the two books, The God of small things and Veronika decided to die, I really enjoyed them both. But I like God of small things way better. I thought that Ms. Roy did an amazing job in telling a story that was complex in all its facets. I was heart broken by the things that the twins would endure and never seemed to fully recover from. I was rooting for them and their sad mother. I did like that the book did not fall into the trap of making the story have a "kumbaya" ending as this would have been odd seeing as nothing in the story was simple or explictly happy.

As for Veronika decides to die, I liked it but I gotta say that I like the The Alchemist better. I think this may stem from the fact that I read it first so when I read Veronika, I felt like it was a rehashing of most the same ideas that had been covered in the alchemist with different characters and in a different location. So for me Veronika was not as fresh a book for me as alchemist was.

Anyway those are my thoughts. Talk to you soon.

Patricia
Hi, thanks for the comment, it made me feel better. :)

I liked all five of the books, but the first couple were my favorites. I don't think the later ones were nearly as funny. The last book seemed to be basically written only to tie up the strings.
