Work as a web/technology consultant, currently working on LibraryThing itself. I've worked on the in-place editing for your catalog. I wrote most of the code behind Common Knowledge. I wrote most of the code for displaying reviews on the site. I prototyped most of LibraryThing Local. And I've dabbled in most of other code at some level or another. See my WikiThing page for more information about my past and current LibraryThing projects.

I also do quite a bit of archaeological data research. I am a member of the Coroplastic Studies Interest Group of the AIA and I am the primary developer of numerous archaeological data tools including Digmaster and the DATS Project. I was also the director of digital tools at the Lahav Research Project's 1999 paperless digital dig season. I have presented papers at AIA and ASOR.

You can get me at christopher at librarything dot com.
Also do quite a bit of photography, drawing, and painting. You can find some of my photos on Flickr under the username of conceptDawg.

I graduated from Mississippi State University and on weekends in the Fall you can most likely find me back in Starkville for a football game and some tailgating. Feel free to contact me and hang out at our tailgate if you're going to a game at MSU.

I live in Mobile, Alabama, USA. I'm not from here. We just ended up here because my wife is a chemical engineer and got a job at an oil refinery just west of the city. I grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas and went to Catholic High.

My ideas about design and interface were summed up rather brilliantly by Mr. Emerson quite a while before I came along:
"The beautiful rests on the foundations of the necessary."
"We ascribe beauty to that which is simple; which has no superfluous parts; which exactly answers its ends."
Goodness, that is perfect.

O mojej biblioteceMost of my books are related to either art and art history or computer technology. I have a few fiction paperbacks, but those usually end up being given to friends or "loaned" out permanently when I am finished with them.

I have eclectic interests: archaeology; history; technology; history of technology; secret societies (freemasons, templars, mostly from my interest in archaeology as I've been to many of the places where their histories played out).

conceptDawg---I like your Emerson quotes re: beauty & necessity, & have shared them with some friends, who would like to know where in Emerson's work they are to be found; can you help? thanks. j.a.lesen
Christopher,

We already have a catalog of 1100 materials in our church library which we catalogued using Collectorz software. If we were to switch to LibraryThing, is there a simple way to just mvoe that collection to your database?

Also can we back up a LibraryThing database to our computer here at the church?

You can reply to us at stgregoryofnyssa.library@gmail.com. Thank you!

Hey cD,
I searched Common Knowledge by Related Movies under "Blade Runner".
It brings up both Blade Runner and The Kite Runner. Should it do that?

I love your pirate photo! It made me laugh...good costume, and that expression...! (NB your normal face is quite pleasant to look at, it's the costume and the grimace that makes it funny.)

Chris,

I tried Tim on this a while ago a didn't get a response. Perhaps he's too busy. Perhaps you are too, but something like, "Gee, that is a problem. We'll look into it," would be nice. Perhaps my catalog is just too big. Anyway...

More than a month ago I posted a set of problems to bug collectors:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/70403

bluetyson reported some similar issues but we didn't get a response.

The problem with adding books may be related to entering tags using the "tags to add" box on the left of the add books page, rather than with selecting collections as I originally thought.

I have also found two new problems. My full list of tags (all collections) will not load on the tags page. This has always been something of a problem, but in the past I had found that in Safari (as opposed to Firefox) and on a reasonably fast computer it worked. Now, no dice. It doesn't even seem to try. My main statistics page also doesn't load. Tried on several computers with fast connections.

I feel like I'm slowly losing functionality. But for a start, the inability to save the edit page is the most serious problem.

Thank you,

Eric
Er, all the LT groups have been deleted?! As of 10 minutes ago.
Come to think of it maybe baby steps would be best, thanks. ML
Oh, you are my new hero! Thank you so much!!
can u read a book on this site,if so,how?
Okay, is the "wishlist" for books I wish I have read or own? If so how do I generate that list? In general I have had issues with the collections and how to utilize that function. I have been a member for awhile, but, being technologically challenged, need baby steps first. Thanks for the help.
That's OK. I figured out by trial and error. I was actually adding the comic book series of the 'The Gunslinger'
I went to Stephen King's website and downloaded pictures from there.

Thanks for getting back to me, tho!!

Hello,
unfortunately the column titles in "your libary" have disappeared once again for my Opera browser (it had been working quite well until ? yesterday?). It would be very nice for you to have a look again. Kind regards and sorry for being a nuisance. Christian
Hello,

As a developer on Library I am hoping that you will be able to resolve a problem I have, namely:

The books in my library, that I cannot find covers for, and which previously had captions (author and title) have now completely disappeared. Can you please tell me how I can get the information back on the blank covers. This is also happening for any additional new books that I add.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

David (orientalist)
By the way, I covet your book on Chinese Domestic Furniture.
Yo, Dawg-
I have a question, and don't seem to be able to find the answer elsewhere. I have two separate accounts on LT, one for books and one for music (I know, I know!). Obviously, much if the music collection is unique, as I have the only LT copy of many items. The question is, supposing I want to integrate the accounts now that collections is available, is there an easy way to do this? I've tried "adding" to my main account from my music collection, but rather than just transferring the unique record, it asks if I want to use Amazon or some other source.

Am I missing something, or am I just looking for trouble?

Thanks,
Maki

P.S. Thanks for all your excellent work on this site.
i can see you're bombarded with requests to join the BETA testing group - just thought i'd also throw my hat into the ring.

thanks.
Hello

I see you are listed as a developer for Librarything.com. I am trying to downkad a cover that is on my desktop to
a book that is in my collection. I have tried wit a JPEG & a PDF. when I find and upload the next page says done but no picture.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for you help!!

Hi Chris, I'd like to join the BETA group if possible. Thanks.
Hi Chris, If you are need of yet another BETA volunteer, let me know.

Thanks,
Carrie
conceptDawg,
I would like to become a member of the BETA group as well if you haven't been overwhelmed with new members already!
Thanks!
Colleen
our firewall at work won't let me through to your link. I'm sorry. I can try this evening from home.
Hi conceptDawg. May I please be admitted to the BETA group?
Noticed you lived in Mobile. In case you're interested, I'll be signing copies of my new novel, Dirty Little Angels, this Saturday at Page and Palette in Fairhope (from 2-4pm). Here's a link that provides info about the book. Hope you can make it.

Chris:

The new widget thing with the book covers is awesome, but there does not seem to be any instruction as to how and where to place it. I have a book blog www.rabbitreader.blogspot.com and i would love to place it there, but nothing tells me how -- nothing in English, anyway ;->

Thanks for another great idea for LT

Hello, I hope you can help me with something that occurred before the latest catalog stuff. It's this book of mine
http://www.librarything.com/work/8138597...
Now matter what I do I cannot make it appear as part of the count on the author page. If I click to edit my copy and then click save, it will make the Nelson Doubleday page say I have all 45 books. It will stay sometimes for a few hours, but sometimes only a few minutes, and then it's back to saying I only have 44.
Why is it doing that?

Thank you for all you do,
Collectorator
Thanks for the update, Chris. I guess I'll continue displaying profile covers using HTML for the time being

thanks for the add to the BETA board!!!!
Do you ever sleep?

All night makeovers make me sleepy to just read about :)
just wanted to thank you for posting that screenshot of the new features! it's beautiful! keep up the great work (and do try to take it easy every once in a while).

i'd also like to ask to be added to the Board for Extreme Thing Advances (which i imagine is rather gigantic at this point).

thanks!
Hi, I'd like to join Board for Extreme Thing Advances.
Thanks. :)
*knock, knock* Can I come into the BETA group please, pretty please?
Hi, when you get a chance (but before collections!) please add me to the BfETA group.
Please add me to the Board for Extreme Thing Advances. Thanks!
Thanks, Invitation accepted.
Hi Chris,

I know you've been swamped (not only handcuffed to collections, but also helping out on other widgets, gizmos and jiggers that are thrown your way); nevertheless, I am hoping that you might have a moment to spare...

I would like to redo how covers are displayed on my profile page. Currently, I am using img tags in HTML pointing to the files used to display covers at the same size in my catalog. Ideally, I would like to use the coverthing_dynamic command instead, but it does not currently support a height parameter (only a width parameter).

Before I begin to aggresively bump the talk topic where Tim said that he would implement a coverthing_dynamic height parameter, I thought I would ask you if the pending collections capability is likely to provide a method that serves my purposes.

So...

1) will the initial release of collections feature the ability to automatically display on your profile page the covers contained in certain collections?

2) if so, will this be available for any collection, or only a few predetermined collections?

3) if so, will covers displayed on the profile page be adjusted to have the same height (I hate ragged heights; don't mind different widths) and

4) if so, will the size of the profile covers be user-selectable

Ideally, I'd like to populate custom collections (such as "Recently Read") with only those books I wish to appear on my profile (not tied tightly to my reading dates, since I definitely don't want my profile to display every book that I've recently marked as having finished). Will this be possible initially?, soon?, eventually?, never?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer this -- the best I can offer in exchange is a laudatory entry on the LibraryThing Haiku page...

I am having problems with both the SORT and the SEARCH functions on my library. For example, when I do a search for "Annie Dillard" a page comes up saying "displaying 4 of 4"; however, it only displays 2 books. So I tried the SORT. Your FAQ said I should click on the title of the column that I want to sort by; however, my author column does NOT have a title. I have also tried your re-indexing the library function but it does not help. Thank you for your assistance.
I have not been able to see the pictures taken at the recent Flash Mob. When I go to "blog" and begin to accsess them I get (on Mac) the whirling ball and "Safari Quit" etc. every time for several days altho every other place I use LT works perfectly.
Hi Chris,
I am very, very new to the site just hearing about it through an ad for the Cat so please forgive me for what may appear to be an inordinately dumb question. When I was searching for the answer I came across your name. Since I too have a son named Chris who is a wizard with computer repair and networking, I was compelled to choose you as my best hope for a solution to my problem. Perhaps not the most sound of reasons but my reason nonetheless, so here goes:).
I recently purchased a Cat scanner hoping to be able to use it to facilitate listing books into the two book swapping sites that I use regularly. Since I have a library of more than two thousand books I hoped it would make posting the books I wanted to trade easier. I seem to have run into an unexpected difficulty however. While I have found that it works pretty well in scanning in and getting the correct title and author to come up on the list here at this site, for some reason the ISBN is not listed in the information about the book. I either need to be able to import the information from this site directly into Paperbackswap.com and Bookmooch.com or I need to have the ISBN number come up on the listing of the book's information so I can have two windows open at the same time and 'cut and paste' the ISBN number from this site to the other site.
Can you help me with this problem Chris? Since computers are definitely NOT my strong suit..being as my son calls me, "computer daft", I need some help to come up with a solution. The reason I bought the Cat in the first place was because my vision is deteriorating and reading the little print of the ISBN numbers is becoming increasingly difficult. The prospect of trying to use a magnifying glass and enter the sheer volume of books I want to list is just too daunting, but I want to be able to offer the books to other people who may want to read them but can't afford to purchase them. Please help me figure out a way to get the information the Cat provides so easily into the places where I need it to reach.
Thank you so very much for your time and attention,
Celeste

Question about your reading timeline (which I hope Tim will let you officially develop someday).... Is there a way to show it without books added/acquired? Someone said that there's an extra suffix that will make it into what I want.
I have a naive question...I picked your address because I saw "Dawg" in it! I created a group, but the system says I can't invite anyone to join because I'm not a member, and I can't figure out how to become a member of the group I created. Can you help me? Thanks, Diane
How do I eliminate the Column titled "Shared" from my list. It seems to appear as the last column, even though there is no heading appearing on the label that identifies what should or should not appear. Thanks. --Michael
misericordia has come up with an interesting idea in this thread about an extension to WikiThing. Care to take a look and throw in your twopenn'orth?
Thanks again for reindexing my catalog (whatever "reindexing" is :P)
Hi Christopher,

I've got a question: when I fill in my Amazon Associates ID in the widget I use and refresh the page again, it has disappeared. I've tried it several times, but it doesn't seem to work...

Thank you.
Ingrid
Can I really only add one book at a time in the Add Books page?
I add a book, then have to do the author search again, page ahead, select the next book, repeat.

I must be doing something wrong. Can't imagine you can only add one book at a time and not get straight back to the author's list. But I can't see another way.

It would take me weeks to input my library!
Christopher, My profile stats correctly lists my location as Chicago, Illinois. However, I only get "local news" for Boston, MA on my page. I'd really like to keep up on author signings and readings in Chicago and not Boston. Can you fix this? Thx, Liza
Your "Christopher's House" photo makes me dizzy, the buildings look like they are falling over...nice photo!
Christopher,
I know this may be a dumb question but I've gone to FAQ, checked out the tour, looked and looked for this answer and am down to asking someone (like the website developer?).

I just send in my lifetime membership $ so I don't feel guilty asking a question.

I was introduced to LibraryThing through friends. So, HOW do I check out a particular individuals LibraryThing info? (I am not interested in blogging etc. just want to see my friend's profile/books read etc.)

I thank you VERY much for your help. Honestly, I did check FAQ thoroughly.

Carol VanDeventer
Christopher, As a software developer, I thought you might have some answers for me. I kind of stumbled into the Library Thing while surfing for book related sites and saw your name as sofware design/developer to Library Thing.

My question: I have a library of approximately 3-4,000 books that I want to catalog based on the dewey decimal or Library of Congress or other such respected cataloging system. The software I've Googled is for much larger libraries which need to be able to check books in and out and a whole lot more than what I need. I'm looking for fairly basic library sofware for a home library that will allow me to inventory and organize my books in keeping with standards utilized for much bigger libraries. Do you or any of your friends or acqaintances know the names of software packages that do this?
Any direction or advice you can give me would be appreciated.

jvm@onemain.com
hi
would you tell me how can i my books plz?
i have add some book but i donot know how to use and rede them
when i click on edith on the cover of my book(ex.Brunner & Suddarth's Textbook of Medical Surgical Nursing ) under the the review box is writhen none.
pleaze help me!!!!
Thank you very much for fixing my index. This has been bugging me for ages and I thought it was just one of those things. It just shows that one should always ask. Thank you, again.
Bug problem- No direct link from book's main page here on lt to amazon. For instance, when I click on amazon.com under "buy, borrow, swap, or view", it takes me to amazon's homepage and not the book listed. This is with any book, new or old.
Hi,

I may not be telling the right person, so forgive me and hopefully you can pass this information onto the correct department.

In the gallery, author Ridley Pearson is identified as Ellen Rimbauer which is a character in his book, The Diary of Rose Red. Just thought I'd let you know.

Thanks,

Dana
RE: my post from the problems page, one user's stars don't show on my homepage but it still tells me that she has rated a book. The user is BCCJillster and her library isn't private. Thanks for looking into this. It's no big deal if it is too time consuming or little for you to bother with, just a small annoyance. Thanks!
Christopher,

For the life of me I'm not sure just what it is you're competing for. Most of the dedicated LibraryThing users are "keepers" as well as readers and have paid the lifetime membership already because we appreciate all the sort and tag functionality. Meanwhile, I think the social network aspect, while by no means bare bones, doesn't seem quite as attractive as the way it's done on GoodReads or Shelfari!

I'm not looking for LibraryThing to make my 5,000 book database available to Goodreads - well, now that I think on it I suppose in a sense I am - so much as I'd like an "import my reviews" sort of functionality.

But, I guess this goes back to proprietary use. If I'm building the personal database from mostly Amazon data and writing my own reviews, once you have my membership fee what exactly are you protecting or competing for? This looks to me more like fish and kelp competing over who gets to use the ocean.

Can my tagging schemes be sold as some sort of geek algorithm?

I hope you're not planning to billboard this out like MySpace or Facebook where the functionality drowns in the net noise.

- Barney Dannelke
Hello Christopher,

I'm not sure if you would be the go-to developer for this but I'm a lifetime member of LibraryThing

http://www.librarything.com/profile/Dann...

and a new-ish member of the book site Goodreads

http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/72162

which are fairly complimentary sites - and I was wondering if there were any plans in the works to more closely link or integrate these two sites.

Regards and best wishes - Barney Dannelke

I'm having problems with Library Thing. It will not let me delete books now and it will not let me change covers the books. Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
Hi Chris, is there a way to add spell check soft ware so when I am leaving a comment after I am done writing I can run spell check. I am a terrible speller with that feature I would feel more comfortable leaving comments. Thank you
Michael
I Christopher,

Not sure if you are the correct person, but I was unable to add my Facebook "fan" page to my profile. It would be great to be able to do that. Thanks!
Heather
Just to let you know - assuming you don't read the thread on the new customization option from the top every time - I posted a new message on the "Members with your books" problems over at Bug Collectors:

http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.ph...
Chris -- (and Tom)

I like the new member page and have just one suggestion: Under the section entitled "Member's Zeitgheist", why not list the number of the rating of the size of the member's library as it grows. I was chatting to Tim one day and he easily told me I was 16,500 in size that day. I believe you have an easy way to do this, and I would be sooooo happy to see my numbers bring me up the ladder. And yes, I suppose it IS PURE ego and against my theology, but I just think it would be the neatest thing!
Dear Christopher:

Re: http://www.librarything.nl/talktopic.php...

At present, I cannot even ping LT.com (www.librarything.com) any more. When trying and pinging LT.com, I get : "host www.librarything.com cannot be found". Because of this, of course, a call for whatever LT.com page is returning a 404 error.

I can ping (and reach) LT.nl [72.12.88.181] though. Then again, LT.nl (as a whole) is crippled far beyond the original report.

Yours,

boekerij.
Help!

Downloads of my own library, access to titles for editing are running incredibly slow - 3 to 5 minutes to download library or re-sort.
What's up with that? My speed test indicates normal download timesthrough my modem, generally.

Thanks for looking.
My Connection News is behaving beautifully now. Thank you.
Hi,
I am unable to access the 50 similar libraries under Connections. This has been going on quite a long while and I actually do miss it. I think it's a nice feature. I did report this to Abby a while back and I think she said she would report it to Tim? Thanks!
Congratuations on the new addition to your family!
Congrats!

And thanks for the help with my problem.
Congrats on your beautiful little girl!!
I found the pics of your daughter. She gorgeous!!
Best wishes, Chris, to you and your wife on your new parenthood!! So where is the information about your little one?!
Just FYI
Your changelog on the wiki is displaying "March 2008" instead of "May 2008" at present.
on zeitgheist, largest libraries: keeping in the tradition of listing the top one percent the largest libraries, coiuld you please expand the number from 3,000 to 4,000? Now that we have more than 400,000 members? Of course, you couild expand it to 5,000 members since we shall meet 500,000 by the end of the year if not by the end of summer.

Thank you.
The bubbly is on ice. All the best to you and your wife. All LT expects a "Yellow Box" on the home page -- "It's a ....."

Jim
I just want to thank you for all the hard work you do for this site, and especially for all the recent bugs you have been fixing and working on fixing. It really is impressive. Thank you!
I was just editing a book's information under via the 'Edit' pencil, and got an error when I accidentally included a ' instead of a ". I was able to reproduce it with another book, adding a ' to the end of the Novelization tag. The message I got was:

You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '12 Monkeys: A Novel', books_sortcharacter=1, books_authorunflip='Hand, Eliza' at line 3

UPDATE bookstack SET books_tags='Science Fiction,Novelization'', books_title='12 Monkeys: A Novel', books_sortcharacter=1, books_authorunflip='Hand, Elizabeth', books_date='1995', books_ISBN='0061056588', books_admin_sameness=1819554821, books_yourrev='0', books_sort_author='handelizabeth', books_rating=0, books_datebought = 0, books_datestarted = 0, books_dateread = 0, books_sameness_resolved = 2033384120, books_copies = 1, books_lang = 'eng', books_lang2 = '', books_lang_original = '', books_indexed = 0, books_refresh = 1 WHERE books_id=15279005 AND books_userid='dnorum'
- fatal error (31.1)

I apologize if this is mentioned elsewhere, but it looks like there's something buggy with whatever code handles the SQL commands (queries? - I'm not familiar with SQL).
How do I turn off "Community Knowledge"? When people start renaming books in order to indulge their private fetishes -- disregarding the actual title on the book itself -- it is beyond stupid.

Nor -- again -- are any of my Orwell part of any "Complete Works of" -- yet that is how they are repeatedly MIScategorized.
Hello Chris .. new member here .. great site/concept .. I would like to change my user name but the function shows as unavailable (in the Tools tab) .. do you know if it will be available soon? Thanks.
sphece, I can't answer you since you don't have comments enabled nor do you have your email public. The best place to ask is in Talk under Bug Collectors group. That way we can have some back-and-forth without you needing to enable stuff on your profile.
Can't figure this out.. The system will not let me log back into two groups that I created and made "private" , and now I would like to delete them. How can I do that?
Thanks
Are you back to work?
Just a bump about Other Authors problem.
Get well soon. You ARE missed.
Thanks for getting back to me...once specific example is with the author Elizabeth Zimmerman...if I enter Elizabeth in the Search it returns all of the books in my library by Elizabeth Zimmerman...if I type in Aimmerman or Elizabeth Zimmerman or Zimmerman, Elizabeth it returns NO books...strange. Thanks for looking into this for me. DJNL
Congratulations on the "new" job. Also, you have a face! Who knew?
Congratulations on your full-time employment (shacklement?) Chris, it is long overdue! :)
Hi, Love your site...am new to it...question in Search...when I type in just the last name of an author to search for in my library it comes back with no results (I know the name is there), but if I type in the same author's first name, the correct results show and if I type in the whole name, with last, first ot first, last..again no results??? What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
djnl07
I can test when on that computer, which will depend on the weather tonight.
Hey cD, got a question for you... on Common Knowledge, on the book pages, is it possible to have a 'misc notes' spot? I'm thinking it would be interesting to notate an author's first novel or similar info. I don't think it belongs in the disambiguation notice though. What are your thoughts?
My Profile page frequently superimposes over other pages. What is going on here? Anything I can do to stop this?
